A Beginners Guide to The Wonderful World of Accents & Dialects
How do actors learn a dialect? What happens if they’re cast as a real-life person?
What can I expect on the day?
Fun – and facts! This one-day practical workshop will introduce you to the ‘nuts and bolts’ of dialect acquisition and explore some of the tips and tricks used in helping an actor learn a new accent. This is a practical workshop, where you’ll be encouraged to ‘have a go’ in a safe environment.
What do I need to bring?
Yourself, curiosity and a sense of humour. Please also come dressed in comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water.

A pencil and highlighter pen will also be useful.

Hilary Jones BA. I.P.A Cert TESOL
Hilary has taught generations of actors at some of the UK’s most prestigious drama schools and was, for many years, the specialist dialect coach and lecturer in Voice for Media at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She has worked on countless productions across theatre, radio, opera, musicals, TV (Waterloo Road, Case Histories).and film (including The Wife for which Glenn Close won her 2019 Golden Globe)
Her most recent work includes Mull Theatre’s Night Waking, Channel 4’s Big Mood, Richard Gadd’s Half Man – currently airing on BBC 1 and the upcoming audio drama ‘Libra’ which will be broadcast on Radio 4 on the 9th and 16th of August.
