Màiri Morrison, Alasdair Roberts and Pete Johnston were originally due to tour Scotland
and England in October as a trio, in support of their recent album Remembered in Exile: Songs
and Ballads from Nova Scotia (Drag City Records)
However, we are now delighted to reveal that, thanks to the generous support of the Canada
Council for the Arts, the touring group will be expanded to a quintet with the addition of
Canadian drummer/percussionist Jake Oelrichs and Scottish fiddler Neil McDermott.
Scottish Gaelic singer Màiri Morrison, a native of the Isle of Lewis, was invited along with
Scottish folk singer and guitarist Alasdair Roberts by Canadian bass player Pete Johnston to
record Remembered in Exile, a collection of traditional songs from Nova Scotia of both
Highland Gaelic and Lowland Scots origin. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Pete is currently
based in Toronto and has a background in jazz, coupled with an ever-deepening interest in the
musical traditions of his native province.
Released earlier this year, Remembered in Exile was recorded in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and
also features Jake Oelrichs on drums, among other fine Canadian musicians. Jake is a long-
term resident of Toronto, a highly versatile drummer and percussionist who is highly active in
his city’s thriving music scene. The October tour will be Jake’s first time in Scotland, and we
are certain that audiences will be as delighted to welcome him as his fellow musicians are.
While Halifax, NS-based fiddler Sarah Frank, who plays on Remembered in Exile, is unable to
come on tour, we are happy to announce that the great Scottish fiddler Neil McDermott will be
joining the group. Currently based in Glasgow, Neil is deeply knowledgeable and passionate
about the traditional music of his native Ayrshire, and of Scotland, Ireland and beyond, and as
well as being a fine fiddler is a versatile multi-instrumentalist.
