Join us for an informal series of talks at The Straw Yard in a cabaret-style setting.
Speakeasy is programmed by Berwick creatives Samantha Cary and Chris Adriaanse, who are inviting artists with practices that resonate with them to share insights about their career, art and creative practice, followed by a Q&A with the audience.

We are delighted to be hosting Alice Walter at the Straw Yard for the second event in the series. Samantha has invited Alice, citing her as one of her favourite painters: “On seeing her work I assumed it was part of the canon and fell in love instantly.”
But in fact, Alice lives in a coastal town on the south coast of England where she makes her singular, bewitching works. She is joining us to talk about these works and the ups and downs of surviving as an artist.
The event will finish with contributions from the audience, where Berwick-based artists are encouraged to share a recent piece of work accompanied by a few words about it.
All welcome.
Alice will be offering studio visits ahead of the events. Join the Speakeasy Roster to be considered.
About Alice Walter
Alice is an artist working predominantly in painting, building surfaces out of different sections of wood and canvas, as well as incorporating other media. She graduated in 2014 with a BA (Hons) in Painting at the University of Brighton and is based in Bexhill-on-Sea on the South East coast of the UK where she lives and works.
She has exhibited nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include the Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, London, (2026), ‘One Thing Touches Another’, Maya Frodeman Gallery, Wyoming, US, (2025), ‘Open-Eyed Sleep’, Oceans Apart gallery, Manchester (2025).
Solo shows include ‘Turnstile’, East Sussex Coast College, Hastings (2025) and ‘Fruit Foole’, Project 78 Gallery, St Leonards-on-Sea (2021). She has featured in several group exhibitions at Towner Gallery and Volt Gallery in Eastbourne and has been artist-in-residence at Airspace Gallery and Glyndebourne Opera House.
The works invoke different ways of seeing, for there are multiple ‘realities’ present, in terms of depth of space, sense of scale, variations in surface and the possibility for a multitude of interpretations.
