Join us for an informal series of talks at The Straw Yard in a cabaret-style setting.
Speakeasy is programmed by Berwick creatives Samantha Cary and Chris Adriaanse, who are inviting artists with practices that resonate with them to share insights about their career, art and creative practice, followed by a Q&A with the audience.

We are delighted to be hosting Virginia Bodman at the Straw Yard for the third event in the series.
Samantha says: “It is such a pleasure to invite another favourite painter to Berwick to talk about their work. Virginia was my painting tutor at The University of Sunderland. Now retired from teaching, her work is better than ever. She lives and breathes painting; her work is ambitious, playful and absolutely delights in the medium.”
All welcome.
Virginia will be offering studio visits ahead of the events. To take advantage of this opportunity join the Speakeasy Roster .
The event will finish with contributions from the audience, where Berwick-based artists are encouraged to share a recent piece of work accompanied by a few words about it.
About Virginia Bodman
For over 50 years, Virginia has developed a rich and evolving painting practice grounded in the relationship between place and lived experience.
She is fascinated by the histories and processes of painting, using colour and the materiality of paint to make aesthetically provocative work that stimulates debate about painting and social issues.
Virginia’s CV is extensive and highlights include an Abbey Major Scholarship at the British School at Rome, 1981-–1983, Berwick Gymnasium Fellowship, 1999-2000, and a presentation at the Bolivia Pavilion, Biennale di Venezia 2022. She has shown work with The Globe Gallery and at other venues since 1975.
She lives in Sunderland, spending time each year in the city of Venice.
