The Straw Yard would like to introduce you to your new creative skill.

This series of evening workshops will be led by local creative practitioners offering you an introduction to their chosen craft. As well as supporting the local creative community you’ll learn new skills, meet new people and have a laugh at the same time…oh and did we mention that a complimentary welcome drink and nibbles are included in your ticket price!

2 hours (there will be a 30 minute break)

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:
Discover the joy of crocheting in this hands-on beginner-friendly workshop. You’ll build a solid foundation in essential crochet techniques and leave with your own handmade bookmark or coaster. All materials are provided, so you can simply come along and enjoy the creative process.
What You’ll Learn:
How to hold a crochet hook comfortably
Understanding and maintaining tension
Making a slip knot
Creating a chain and foundation row
Turning your work
Key stitch types: single crochet and double crochet
How to change colours
Each new skill will be introduced step-by-step: first by demonstration, then group practice, followed by individual support so everyone can progress confidently. You’ll then have time to work on your own creation and explore your own design ideas.
ABOUT JOANNA, YOUR CREATIVE PRACTITIONER:
Joanna says:
“Hi, I’m Joanna, a Textile Design graduate from the University of Dundee. I taught myself to crochet at the start of my degree and now design my own patterns and run workshops introducing people to textile skills. I’m passionate about bringing crafts like crocheting into primary school settings and love helping others experience the creativity, calm, and confidence that these skills can inspire.
Crocheting is something anyone can try — and I’m excited to guide you through your first steps!”
These workshops are aimed at people aged 18 years and above.
