ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:
Freestyle stitching is a way of creating surface texture and interest on already interesting textiles, stitching flowing motifs without prescribed direction or pattern, using your needle and threads as pencil or paintbrush to draw or paint onto the cloth. It is also a lot of fun and very absorbing!
During this two hour workshop we will learn how to sew several different embroidery stitches and how to combine them to embellish a piece of woollen textile, to make either a brooch or an applique patch.
The workshop includes:
tuition, woollen textile, embroidery threads, use of needles, scissors etc.
Please bring a notebook and writing pen/pencil.

ABOUT JENNIE, YOUR CREATIVE PRACTITIONER:
Jennie says:
“As a lifelong wool crafter I have created things from yarn, mostly wool, for more than 50 years (I started awfully early!). Taught by my grandmothers and mother to knit, crochet, stitch and darn, picking up other woolly skills along the way.
For the last 15 years I have worked as a full time self employed wool spinner, travelling the UK and into Europe to trade at Wool Festivals and Fairs. I even organised my local festival, the St Abbs Wool Festival, twice a year for 7 years.
I have participated in events organised by Selvedge Magazine, been interviewed by and taught the editor of the Journal of Scottish Yarns to spindle spin, and featured on a podcast by the Albanach Knitter amongst others.
Eight years ago I settled down and opened a crafting studio on Bridge Street in Berwick-upon-Tweed and that’s where I work, hand spinning about 50 kilos of yarn each year, on my trusty Ashford Traditional spinning wheel. I design and hand knit garments, accessories and homewares such as cushions and throws.
I also weave, sew, and create rag rugs. From time to time I get involved in community art projects – most recently the “Our Wic crown” project with Create Berwick.
I teach, demonstrate and give talks about spinning, knitting, crochet, weaving, sewing, embroidery and rag rugging.”
